Two US senators plan to introduce legislation this week aimed at allowing the government to “eliminate or ban” foreign tech products like Chinese-owned TikTok, Sen. Mark Warner said Sunday.
Warner, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said TikTok would be “one of the potential” for review under the bill. The Democratic senator made the comments on Fox News Sunday.
The bill comes as TikTok is under increasing pressure over concerns that data on US users could end up in the hands of the Chinese government.
The US House Foreign Affairs Committee voted Wednesday to give President Joe Biden the power to ban TikTok, in what would be the most far-reaching US ban on any social media app.
Last week, the White House gave government agencies 30 days to ensure that TikTok is not present on any federal devices and systems. More than 30 US states, Canada and European Union political institutions have also banned the uploading of TikTok to state-owned devices.
Warner said he was concerned that TikTok “could be an advertising tool” based on the types of videos it sends to users.
He said the bill he plans to introduce “would say, in terms of foreign technology coming to America, we need to have a systematic approach to making sure we can ban or ban it when necessary.”
He said he plans to introduce the bill this week with Republican Sen. John Thune. A Warner spokesperson said he plans to make an announcement on Tuesday.
Details on the proposed law were not available on Sunday. A Thune spokesman did not immediately respond to questions about the plan.
