Will there be surprises next Sunday?
The Writers Awards, also known as the Writers Guild Awards of the United States, have announced the awards of this edition, the last before this awards race ends with the Oscars. ‘Everything at once everywhere’, ‘Ellas hablan’ and the series ‘Severance’ took home the main awards of this edition.
This has been a fairly commented edition given that the WGA, its acronym in English, prepare for a possible strikewhich would lead to a work stoppage in the coming months.
Everything indicates that the guild to which the bulk of the screenwriters of hollywood, the wgawill go on strike and suspend creative work in the coming months, given that the union has been asking for salary increases and changes in its different types of contracts for a long time.
The evening began with several surprise winners, including Sarah Polley, who took the laurel for the adapted screenplay for ‘Talking Women’. The filmmaker pointed out that the themes of the novel ‘They speak’ by Miriam Toews are similar to the problems facing the union in the upcoming negotiations. “It’s about collective action. It’s about having tough conversations, about imagining and taking responsibility for envisioning a better future. That’s the definition of a union.”
Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, the co-writers of this season’s smash hit ‘All At Once…’, spoke from their hearts about the importance of their offbeat film, set in the metaverse, being recognized for its fellow writers. “Writing is confusing and difficult, and we feel so lost so often,” Scheinert said. “Thank you to our therapists,” he said. The other story teller, Kwan, called on his fellow union members to get involved in the behind-the-scenes preparations for a possible work stoppage. “Every single benefit is something that has been fought for and hard-won,” Kwan said of the union’s past successes. “The perverse incentives that this industry has been boiling with They’re going to push us in all directions unless we stick together.”
The evening included fiery comments about the power in Hollywood from Charlie Kaufman, who was awarded the Guion Laurel award for the professional career of the guild in this edition.

In-series honors went to Apple TV+’s ‘Severance’, considered one of the best series of 2022. Screenwriter Andrew Colville told the crowd that he would like to say that “the people on this show were like a working family, but I feel like we’ve screwed up that sentence.” Later in the evening, the ‘Severance’ crew made another trip to the podium to accept the trophy for best drama series.
FX drama ‘The Bear’ took victory in the comedy series category, a category decision that even those in charge of its writing acknowledged was borderline given the dark material at the series’ core. “We’ve finally answered the age-old question: Does comedy have to be funny?” said Rene Gube, one of its writers. “We feel very lucky to write this series. In a lot of ways we feel like we won the lottery to be here and in a lot of ways we feel like we really did.”
Mike White picked up yet another trophy for his second season of HBO’s ‘The White Lotus’, which he won for a limited series. He revealed up front that his career hasn’t always been so smooth, so much so that he has been hospitalized for mental health needs.
