Daniel Scheinert, director and screenwriter together with Daniel Kwan, thanked his therapists
The New York Times – The success of science fiction All everywhere at the same time won the Original Screenplay Trophy at the Writers Guild Awards (Screenwriters Guild) Sunday night, the 5th, rounding out a full lineup of Hollywood’s best union awards. Only four other films have also triumphed with the corporation of directors (directors), Guild of Producers (producers), Guild of Writers (writers) e Film Actors Guild (actors): Argo, No Country for Old Men, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? AND american beauty. All have won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
“Writing is messy and difficult and we feel lost too often,” she said. Daniel Scheinertwith whom he co-wrote and co-directed the twisty film Daniele Kwan. Scheinert praised everyone who read a first draft of the script and added, “Thanks to our therapists.” The film was also the big winner, Saturday, of the Spirit Awards.
About this, Among women prevailed in the adapted screenplay race, leading the competition which included Top Gun: nonconformist AND Glass onion: a knife-edged mystery.
Screenwriter and director of Among women, Sarah Polley praised those who supported her when she left an acting career that included films like Sweet tomorrow AND Dawn of the dead. Polley said with a laugh, “They hired me thinking I was going to be a big movie star. Oops!”
What she really wanted to do was write, Polley explained, and her adaptation of Miriam Toews’ novel about the assaults on a Mennonite community has now earned her a second WGA honor: her first, for a documentary screenplay, came in 2014 for Stories we tellwhich he also directed.
“To be taken so seriously, in this room with so many incredible writers, I really can’t tell what it means to me,” she said.
The road to one oscar for Best Picture usually requires a screenplay win, then the WGA win for All in Everywhere should further solidify the film’s favorite status. However, it wasn’t exactly a fair fight: even though the Original Screenplay category on Oscar night should be a two-way contest between all in all AND The Banshees of InisherinIn Martin McDonaghthis was ineligible for the WGA Award because, like many international films, it was not written under a contractual arrangement with the WGA or its partner unions.
This rule also kept the winner of the Bafta (Nothing new on the front) out of the WGA race for an adapted screenplay, paving a safe path to Entre Mulheres winning. Then while all in all AND Among women are exiting the WGA ceremony with a bang, the real battle is yet to come at the Oscars, and there could be surprises.
Here are the top WGA winners.
