Who is David in The Last of Us

David is The Last of Us’ biggest villain, the leader of a group of antagonists who are encountered by Joel and Ellie on their journey through the ruins of the United States. The group of survivors are even more dangerous than the infected, as they don’t seem like an immediate threat.

In the game, Joel and Ellie slaughter some of David’s group and later end up meeting the leader by chance. Upon learning who they are, the villain pursues the two seeking revenge. Ellie must face the enemy alone in one of the most intense sequences in the game.

In the HBO version, David is very similar to the game character. The antagonist is played by Scott Shepherd and after finding out who he is dealing with, he kidnaps Ellie and tries to kill the girl. The young woman manages to escape and the conclusion of the fight is an epic fight in the middle of a fire.

What has changed about David in the HBO series

David leads his congregation, who seem unaware of his dark secret.

The biggest difference between David in the game and the TV series is his interaction with his group of followers. In the game, it is known that he is the leader of the group and that he is a religious person, although that doesn’t seem to stop David from being a cannibal! In some moments the character appears praying before going into action.

In the TV series, this element is explored further: David is the leader of a religious cult, a pastor who guides and influences his faithful followers. The series leaves open the question of whether the members of the congregation know they are fed human flesh, or whether this is a secret David confides to a few, such as his sidekick James, played by Troy Baker, the actor who voices Joel in Naughty Dog. game – who at a given moment deals with the actions of the leader, which does not happen in the game.

From leader and protector of the community, the cannibal David becomes an even scarier monster than in the game, as he is a character capable of showing empathy and guiding people, a true “wolf in sheep’s clothing”.

With weekly episodes, The Last of Us is available on HBO and HBO Max.
