Who manages to survive the end of the first season of ‘We are dead’? And what unknowns does the Netflix series leave for season 2? Is Lee Cheong-san alive? We explain everything.

The end of season 1 of ‘We are dead’ left the door open to continue exploring one of the most successful Netflix series of the moment. Zombies will return for a second installment, and that’s why we want to review what happened in the last episode, who died, who became a zombie and who continues in their fight for survival. And what the hell does that last scene with Nam-ra mean?

Consisting of twelve episodes, the first season of ‘We are dead’ showed us the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse in South Korea from Hyosan High School. Among the first loves, friendships in danger and dreams of the future, the group of adolescent protagonists must find a way to survive among the hundreds of infected people who have been accumulating in the classrooms. Beyond the courtyard, the country’s authorities are trying to contain the epidemic with drastic measures.

After ‘The Squid Game’, ‘Road to Hell’ and ‘Sea of Tranquility’, the platform has found a new success to add to Netflix’s list of the best Korean series, and it is not going to let it go so quickly. This was the end of the first season of ‘We are dead’, where, of course, not everyone survived.

In episode 1×12 of ‘We are dead’, the main students have to defend themselves one last time from a zombie attack outside the institute, which has been the main scene. Now they are in a nearby town, and a surprise attack ends in death Woo-jin (Son Sang-yeon), the brother of the archer Ha-ri (Ha Seung-ri).

From here, the group begins to dismember. Nam-ra (Cho Yi-hyun), the student infected with a more advanced virus, decides to abandon her classmates.. She does it because, even though her virus seems to allow her to retain her humanity and decision-making ability, she believes that she is a danger to her friends because she is hungry. As much as she can resist that hunger with her willpower, in the end she will go bankrupt, as almost happens with her romantic interest Su-hyeok (Park Solomon), who almost gets bitten, and finally with her partner On-jo (Park Ji-hu).

The rest of the group will be arrested by the authorities and taken to one of the refugee camps., where tests will be carried out to verify that they are not infected. You are safe.

After these events, the series takes a time jump and places us four months later. It seems that the epidemic is improving and the restrictions are being relaxed. This is how On-jo manages to escape a few nights to put gifts on a kind of altar that he has built to commemorate all those who did not make it out alive from the disaster.

One night, he sees from a distance that someone has lit a bonfire on the roof of the institute and decides to go and investigate with him. Su-hyeok, Ha-ri, Dae-su (Im Jae-hyuk), Mi-jin (Lee Eun-saem), and Hyo-ryung (Kim Bo-yoon), who were the final survivors of the season.

Arriving at the place, They find Nam-ra! The zombie-human hybrid has survived all these months and seems to be in much better shape than where we left her. Now, you are not alone. “There are some more like me,” he reveals to his former teammates. And there remains the great mystery for the next season. Who are you referring to? With whom have you spent these months? Will we briefly return to the past in the new episodes, or will Nam-ra become the leader of the story? Without confrontation with the zombies, where does ‘We are dead’ go?

In the last image of the season 1 finale of ‘We are dead’, we see how Nam-ra says “They’re back” and jumps off the roof of the institute. A mysterious outcome that promises new challenges in the future of the series.

Thus, some unknowns remain on the table, and one of the most important is: Is Lee Cheong-san (Yoon Chan-young), On-jo’s romantic interest, alive? If we remember, it seems that he died along with the evil Yoon Gwi-nam (Yoo In-soo) in the explosion of the building under construction, but fans are very doubtful that this was the case. There’s enough ambiguity to expect the character’s return in hybrid form, like Nam-ra. Perhaps both have even been survival partners during these months.

Let’s hope that we can discover the answers to these questions soon, with a second season that could be counted among the Netflix premieres in 2023.
