John Boyega will be the protagonist of the science fiction novel The Freshening

John Boyega returns to science fiction territory for a new film that seems to come straight from the archives of black mirror crew. Starring in a new romantic thriller. refreshmentwhich has Cathy Yan attached to write and direct.

Inspired by Rachel Khong’s short story, published in Paris reviewthe film will be set in a near future where tensions over race and gender have reached a violent extreme and where the US government institutes a public health initiative known as “The Freshening”: every American gets an injection, after which everyone they only see others as of the same race and gender as themselves.

The story follows what happens when a street drug appears on the scene, promising a chance to see the world for what it really is, and new acquaintances Sam and Reese (Boyega) must decide to turn the world upside down.
