Mazzuco apologizes to Botafogo fans for eliminating Carioca: ‘It doesn’t match what we imagined’

The sporting director sees Alvinegro in a moment of restructuring, reveals that football work is constantly being re-evaluated and underlines the need to solve problems

Botafogo’s director of football, André Mazzuco, has expressed his regret at the way the team was eliminated from the semi-finals of the Campeonato Carioca. At a press conference after the 1-0 defeat against Portuguesato Raulino de Oliveira, the director made clear there is frustration among everyone involved in football at the club, including John Textor.

Mazzuco also acknowledged that the moment is one of great reflection after the result below expectations in the State Championship.

– It’s my duty to be here to first apologize to our fans who have been on this journey since we started. It’s a very frustrating moment for us because it’s not what we had imagined for this Carioca. It’s a feeling from the athletes, the managers, John’s (Textor) technical commission… We have to think about why it’s not going well and we have to keep working to get out of this situation – he said -.

The director stressed that it’s time for Botafogo to get back to work. He also specifies that the restructuring will require gradual interventions inside.

– Let’s remember that if we had won the classic against Vasco we would have practically guaranteed the ranking for the semifinals and it was a breaking point. There was that episode in the match against Vasco, then against Flamengo and there was the match against Sergipe, but it’s football, it’s a moment in which you have to be resilient. It’s a moment that everyone needs to work towards. Botafogo is a club undergoing restructuring and not only in football. It’s not just a process in football, it’s all over the club, but our final process is in football. Make it clear that we are all looking for the necessary solutions, we have some gaps that we need to fill, the club still needs to structure itself, it’s all a process that is just beginning. We are aware of this and this is an excuse. Despite the teams we faced but should have qualified, yes – he found.

The leader said he too wants reinforcements. However, he said Botafogo’s moment is to leave his job solid.

– Certain labels and expectations are created for the environment in which we live. Reinforcements have arrived, sometimes they become attached to the number… It is clear that the desire is for six great players to arrive and it is Botafogo’s objective that this growth be gradual. We are working as hard as possible to have a responsibility within the club to balance. We don’t need to focus only on reinforcements, the club needs to solidify. It is clear that we need a team to keep our goals, last year we had goals, we even finished with a chance (of Libertadores), and we didn’t succeed – and he evaluated:

– To be honest, we went through a year of restructuring. The club is in trouble and John is fully aware of it. You always want the ideal, but when you don’t have it, you look for what you can. But that doesn’t justify it, we have good players, coaching staff… We should have given more and looked for better solutions for the club – he added.

Mazzuco revealed that there is a frequent evaluation of coach Luís Castro’s work and highlighted that there is an attempt to return to normal after the “breaking point” that occurred in the defeat against Vasco.

– We talked about it a lot. That match against Vasco was really a pain, if we had known the solution we would have solved it already. We didn’t perform well, we see the team making non-normal technical mistakes, we try to regain confidence, we notice that there is apprehension and a heavier climate. It’s a time when we need to be resilient. It’s a constant evaluation of the work, it comes from John, my, Luís… Football has to give results. Re-evaluation is always done, and today the club has professionals of the highest level, speaking of Castro himself – and he added:

– Today we know how to evaluate ourselves. When you have a frustration or an unfulfilled goal, you need to think through it. Today we have the privilege of having great professionals, Castro is a guy of the highest level, and last year we didn’t stop believing in him. But when you look for solutions and they don’t show up, reevaluate. Today is not good, let’s reevaluate and look for solutions. We have write-ups not only from the coach, but from everyone involved. The focus of the club is not just football at the moment, but football has to deliver results, guaranteed.

Mazzuco denied that Alvinegro is currently in debt.

– The club has no debts to the players, everything is up to date, I can tell you categorically – he said.
