Marvel: Dr. Strange’s translator might have met Thor

While promoting Dr. Strange in the madness multiplayer, Benedict Cumberbatch reveals that before playing the role of the famous spell, he was contacted by Marvel to play the villain in the MCU Phase 2 movie.

Benedict Cumberbatch might not have been MCU Doctor Strange! In 2011, the British actor could have starred in the superhero movie Thor: The Dark World and encountered the famous Asgard god, but which character should he play?

Thor 2 is one of MCU’s favorite movies, and Cumberbatch could have played Malekit, the leader of the Dark Elves. It must be said that at that time Cumberbatch had just played a scary time in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and was undoubtedly trying to play something other than a new opponent in the famous saga.

So he refused as he handed over the microphone BBC Radio 1 :

I dared to say, “I’d rather wait for something more substantial.” I was not contacted until they came back to me through their means and told me they were interested.

And here’s how “no, but” Benedict Cumberbatch opened the door to Marvel’s cinematic world as a recurring superhero rather than coming to the role of a villain in the movie that will never return. Malekit was eventually played by another British actor, Christopher Ecclestone.

As for Cumberbatch, he was finally able to find his MCU character, but taking on the role of Stephen Strange was not obvious:

“I looked at the comics and thought, ‘Look,’ because he’s a very old schoolboy, a little misogynistic, very rooted in the ’70s. I thought it was a bit of a favorite and not sure it was a big role in MCU, I did not understand. They said, “No, he will be the present, he will be the person he is today. Of course, he will have certain aspects because he thinks he is very important. He must show this arrogance.”

Cumberbatch eventually caught up with Marvel’s arguments and he became the face of Dr. Strange after his first appearance at MCU, in 2016. He has appeared six times in this connected world, of which he became one of the leaders of the spear. Indeed, Multiverse of Madness continues to develop the character in order to reduce his arrogance and place him as a more potential leader.
