“I was starting to change the script.”
Jenna Ortega admits to having been, in some way, “unprofessional” on the set of ‘Wednesday’.
The actress gave life to Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series, ‘Wednesday’, which became one of the biggest hits on the platform after its premiere last year.
In a new interview on the podcast Armchair Expert (as shared insiders), Ortega explained that she had certain disagreements with the script, which led her to stand firm.
“Everything that Wednesday did, everything that he had to interpret, did not make any sense for his character.“, he remembered.
“Being in a love triangle made no sense. There was a line about a dress she had to wear, to the school dance, and she had to say: ‘OMG I love it! I can’t believe he said that. I literally hate myself. So I said: ‘No, it can’t be’“.
Ortega added: “hThere were moments on set where I would get somewhat unprofessional and just start changing lines.“.
“So I would sit down with the writers and they would say: ‘What happened to the scene? And I had to explain to them why I couldn’t do certain things.”.
However, the actress also had to accept the proposed evolution of the story. “I became very, very protective of the character, but you can’t lead a story and not have an emotional arc, because then it’s boring and nobody likes you..”
“Wednesday is a teenager. When you’re little, and you say morbid and offensive things, it’s funny and endearing. But when you become a teenager, things change. Now you’re being nasty and you know it. There are no excuses.“
Ortega also acknowledged feeling that ‘Wednesday’ is not his “greatest pride”, and added: “I can’t see my work, but I can go home and say: ‘I liked the scene we shot today’. On ‘Wednesday,’ there was no scene where I went home and said, ‘Okay, this has to be good.'”
The first season of ‘Wednesday’ is available on streaming on Netflix. Season 2 of the series has already been confirmed.
