‘The Mandalorian’: The legend of the Mythosaur and its meaning in the Star Wars universe

“Songs of eons past foretold that the Mythosaur would rise to herald a new era of Mandalore”

    — SPOILERS of episode 3×02 of ‘The Mandalorian’ —

We thought they were a myth from ancient times, but ‘The Mandalorian’ has just shown us that this is not the case: Mythosaurs still exist among us in the Star Wars universe.

Din Djarin’s (Pedro Pascal) involuntary plunge into the Living Waters of the Mandalore Mines and his subsequent rescue by Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) have revealed to us the first look at this gigantic and monstrous creatureconfirming the legends that we have been hearing since the beginning of the Disney + series.

Your ancestors rode the great Mythosaur!said Kuiil (“I have spoken”) in the first season, giving the Mandalorian the boost he needed to successfully mount a Blurrg. This is the first mention of the mythological being in the series, but we already knew that they are the symbol of the culture and Mandalorian religion ever since Bobba Fett wore an emblem with his skull in his first appearance in the saga in 1980, in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. When ‘The Mandalorian’ made its debut in 2019, and we first visited the Armorer’s (Emily Swallow) workshop in Nevarro, you could also see a mythosaur skull about the entrance.

According to the mythology prior to Disney’s purchase of Star Wars, dismissed out of the official canon and listed as “Legends”, Mythosaurs were the dominant species on Mandalore thousands of years before any humanoid species inhabited it.. Compared to the size of the creatures that are described in the writings, the Mythosaur that we have seen in the new episode of ‘The Mandalorian’ could be considered even dwarfor a baby.

However, in these Legends, mandalorians did not ride mythosaurs. For starters, the Mandalorians were not humans but a race called the Taung, and they massacred the Mythosaurs upon their arrival on Mandalore, wiping out their species. But this, as we said before, no longer considered canon within the ‘Star Wars’ universeso Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni they have carte blanche to do what they want with new traditions.

Songs of eons past foretold that the Mythosaur would rise to herald a new era of Mandalore.“, said the Armorer to Mando in an episode of ‘The Book of Bobba Fett’. Not many Mandalorians believed in the old lore and fables and, furthermore, myths often speak in metaphors, and the reference to a Mythosaur very well could have been one.

The last known mention of them occurs moments before their first appearance, when Bo-Katan reads the stone inscription at the entrance to the Living Waters: “These mines date from the era of the first Mand’alor. According to ancient legends, a Mythosaur once lived here. Mandalore the Great is said to have tamed the mythical beast. Due to these legends, the emblem of the skull was adopted and became the symbol of our planet.”

A few seconds later, Bo-Katan discovers that the legends are true, and therefore the prophecy could also come true. Will we see our favorite Mandalorian ride on the back of a Mhytosaurus?
