US weekly jobless claims rise more-than-expected

The number of Americans filing new jobless claims rose more-than-expected last week, but the underlying trend remained consistent with a tight job market.

Initial jobless claims rose by 21,000 to a seasonally adjusted 211,000 for the week ending March 4, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 195,000 inquiries for the past week.

Claims remained below 200,000 for seven consecutive weeks, indicating that job cuts in the tech sector had no material impact on the job market.
