Shanny Palmer traveled to Mexico to have a cosmetic procedure on her abdomen and ended up with 3rd degree burns on her hands
the American Shanny Palmer36 years old, had partial amputations of his right thumb and left middle finger after suffering a surgery. The patient’s goal was to perform a series of Plastic surgery on the abdomen, chest and hips.
The mother of three paid $12,500 (about R$64,000) to have the surgery done at a clinic in Tijuana, Mexico. Some of the procedures would abdominoplasty (which removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen), repairing the abdominal muscles, lifting the chest and transferring fat to the hips.
The practice, common in the United States, is known as “medical tourism“, in which residents seek out other countries to have surgeries at cheaper prices.
Everything was planned months in advance with a trusted doctor who had a regular professional record. In September 2022, Palmer arrived at the clinic, performed the procedure and when he woke up from the anesthesia he realized something was wrong: his hands were burning.

When she reported the discomfort to the doctors, she was informed that, during the plastic surgery, her hands went cold, which prompted a team nurse to place bags of warm saline in the region, to warm her up.
As a result, Palmer won second and third degree burns which later resulted in the amputation of parts of his right thumb and left middle finger.
“I suffered permanent damage to some fingers due to THIRD degree burns due to negligence coming out of anesthesia”, the victim complains on her Instagram. In the same profile, there are several recordings of Palmer using his hands to make intricate designs before the accident.
“It has uprooted everything I do as a mother, an artist and a creator. I will have to relearn to write, cut, draw, eat, all with my left hand and do physical therapy to be able to go back to work,” she says.
