The Inspector General of the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Benedito Gonçalves, asked permission from Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Tribunal (STF), to hear the former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Public Security of the Federal District , Anderson Torres, in an action that could make former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) ineligible.
Bolsonaro is under investigation for attacks on the electoral system carried out in a meeting with ambassadors at the Palácio da Alvorada in July last year. The corregidor wants to hear Torres about his possible involvement in the meeting and about the circumstances linked to the so-called “draft coup” seized in his home by the Federal Police. The document’s inclusion as evidence against Bolsonaro in the investigation was unanimously approved by the TSE last month.
If authorised, the hearing must be held on March 16, via videoconference. Testimony depends on Moraes’ approval because Torres is under arrest as part of the investigation under his rapporteur. The former secretary is suspected of having failed to lead the public security forces on January 8, when extremists invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the three powers in Brasilia.
Gonçalves scheduled the testimony of Colonel Eduardo Gomes da Silva and Federal Police officials Ivo de Carvalho Peixinho and Mateus de Castro Polastro for the same day at the TSE headquarters.
As part of this investigation, which is the most advanced of the 16 Electoral Investigation Actions (AIJES) underway against Bolsonaro at the Electoral Tribunal, former Minister of the Civil House Ciro Nogueira was also heard.
