After showing the story of Riley and Ellie in “The Last of Us” where the latter is infected with cordyceps, the penultimate episode of the series left a question in the air about how the fungus works in her body.
Ellie is the only person unaffected by being exposed to or bitten by someone with it cordyceps fungus (which exists in real life)even her immunity would be full because she’s been bitten multiple times and she never transforms.
Eli’s immunity to the fungus is what makes her special and prompts Joel (Pedro Pascal) to accompany her to the United States to a Firefly hospital to develop a cure with her blood.
However, the fact that there are traces of cordycephalus in her wound, and technically the fungus is in her body, suggests that she is immune but can spread the infection to others.

Can Ellie infect others in ‘The Last of Us’ if she bites them?
In HBO’s “The Last of Us” Chapter 8, Ellie is caught by David, the leader of a group that has resorted to cannibalism to survive, and when he is about to kill her, she bites him and tells him that she is now contaminated..
Although in order to save his life Ellie resorts to biting him and revealing to him that she is infected, it could not be seen if David was transformed into a monster, as shortly after the same girl beats him to death.
Fortunately, the PlayStation video games the series is based on can tell if Ellie is indeed asymptomatic and can spread the fungus to other people if she bites them.
‘The Last of Us’: this is how Ellie’s immunity works in video games
We could see in “The Last of Us” that the infected can spread the fungus with kisses and bites, so if Ellie is theoretically infected but has no symptoms, she could also infect someone.
However, in the TV game ‘The Last of Us Part II’ (2020) the condition of the fungus inside Ellie is clarified and it is clarified that she cannot transmit it even through kisses or bites.
In a flashback to the game you can find a piece of Ellie’s journal where she says that at 16 she got a tattoo on her arm to cover the scar she has from an infected bite.
When Elli got her tattoo with her friend Cat, she steals a kiss and is immediately rejected by Elli, who fears that she has contaminated her with saliva.
Elli apologizes to her and lies to her about her anger, telling her that she had never kissed a woman and that’s why she was surprised, but she was actually worried about her and spent the whole day by her side making sure she didn’t transform.
Also in the second game Ellie has a relationship with another character, who has already appeared in the HBO series, so she is confirmed to be immune and also unable to infect others.
Additionally, the events at the end of the first game where Ellie is being studied by the Firefly doctors indicate that the cordicephals in her body have been mutated to not control their host’s brain.
Ellie’s immunity in the series can be tweaked a bit, but she’s unlikely to infect others, as shown by the dog not being able to detect the fungus on her, the cordyceps on her body are harmless.
