The FPF (Federation of Football Paulista) confirmed on Monday that São Paulo will send the match against Água Santa, for the quarter-finals of the Paulista Championship, to Allianz Parque, home of Palmeiras. The ball rolls from 20h (from Brasilia).
Tricolor will not be able to use its stadium, the Morumbi, for this match as it will be closed to host shows by the band Coldplay. The club will then repeat a somewhat common scenario in its history, but which hasn’t happened since 1995.
That year, the team sent a commitment to Palmeiras’ home for the last time since. It was not the modern day bullring, but the Palestra Italia, or Parque Antártica. On this occasion he was defeated by Portuguesa, 2 to 1, in a match valid for the fourth round of the Paulistão.
The players, Paulinho Mclaren, of Portuguesa, and Júnior Baiano, of San Paolo, during the last match under the command of the tricolor at the Palestra Itália.
Lusa won the match with goals from Jorginho and Tiba. The only Italian goal was scored by Caio Ribeiro. However, what catches the eye in that match is the presence on the pitch of two Sao Paulo idols, who now occupy other positions at the helm of the club.
The first of them, current coach Rogério Ceni, was in the rafters. At the time he was Zetti’s backup, but on that date he was playing in the starting lineup.
Football coordinator Muricy Ramalho, in turn, commanded the team as interim Telê Santa. Subsequently he will also mark the season with the San Paolo shirt as an effective coach, accumulating several titles.
Tricolor’s lineup in that duel was: Rogerio Ceni; Cláudio, Júnior Baiano, Rogério Pinheiro and André Luiz; Donizete Oliveira, Axel, Juninho Paulista and Sierra; Straw and Bentinho.
That, however, was not the only opportunity that Morumbi’s team took advantage of in the new headquarters. A poll by São Paulo historian Michael Serra records that the club has already played 69 matches in the rival stadium.
This time the Tricolore will take the field for a place in the Paulista 2023 semi-final. The clash with Água Santa will be played in a single match, so if a draw prevails after 90 minutes, the winner will be defined on penalties.
