Being fully aware of your decision and drawing up a clear action plan are some essential factors, according to the specialist.
Are you thinking about changing careers? According to a November 2022 survey conducted by Empregos.com.br, a professional outplacement portal, approximately 77% of professionals in the Brazilian job market intend to change jobs in 2023.
Faced with this scenario, Dani Verdugo, CEO of THE Consulting, has separated 5 secrets to help professionals in this delicate and uncertain moment:
1. Be confident in your decision
“At this point, the first step is to reflect on the reasons that were decisive for this decision. An interesting suggestion is to write down – literally – the reasons that are leading the person to this career change and review them when necessary, from the beginning to the end of the process”, underlines Dani Verdugo.
2. Create your action plan
“With the decision made and the right connection with the established motivations, the second step is to start a clear and objective planning that takes into account all the training/structure already acquired by the professional in the aspects: technical, financial and interpersonal relationships. Once that’s done, it’s worth answering questions like: Am I ready for this transition? Do I have a financial structure that can support me along the way? Do I have a network of relationships that can shorten this process?” she says.
3. Set clear, objective and achievable goals
“The third step is to clearly set goals and deadlines. This aspect, although the most technical, is essential for the person to find a greater impulse to commit themselves to what they proposed at the beginning of the transition”, underlines Headhunter.

4. Pay attention to the development of new soft skills
“The market is increasingly looking for professionals with well-developed transversal skills. This is a general request, which does not depend on the area of activity. Skills such as: creative thinking, flexibility, effective communication, resilience, among others, are an extremely important differential when hiring and analyzing, by the recruiter, if the person fits the needs of a given position”, explains the founder of THE group.
5. Be aware of your emotions during the transition process
The expert points out that there are two different scenarios and that the emotional issue can be influenced in different ways in the case of each of them.
“The first is when the professional opts for the switch by their own decision and the second is when this switch begins following a unilateral dismissal by the company. However, in both scenarios it is important to be aware of three central points: our ability to contribute to a new professional scenario, as well as our already developed skills and the points we need to develop, ”he says.
Preparation for the change of course must be meticulous
“In the situation in which there has been a unilateral dismissal, the person tends to become more fragile, therefore it is important to prioritize a work of understanding the reasons that led to the dismissal and, subsequently, to elaborate a professional replacement plan. My main advice, during this delicate period, is not to isolate yourself and look exclusively at the ‘grieving process’, but also to understand that there are a number of opportunities that present themselves in this new cycle,” he adds.
“Now in the scenario where the professional was preparing for a transition, they are more emotionally organised, but even so there is a shock from the change of routine, so it’s important to stay active and focused on a new work plan. My final advice, for both cases, it is always important to bet on a psychological follow-up, combined with physical activities. Take care of your mind and body to better face this process of change and everything tends to become lighter”, concludes the CEO of THE Consulting.
