‘Scream VI’ tinkers with the return of a presumably dead character

The franchise shows that anything can happen.

      ‘Scream VI’ spoilers ahead

It’s hard to kill someone in the series ‘Scream’with numerous characters surviving multiple stab wounds. Even when you think they’re dead, the series has started to bring them back (hello Kirby!)

So it’s no surprise that longtime fans have always had their theories about who might return. After Billy Loomis made a surprise return in ‘Scream’ (albeit as a vision in his daughter Sam’s mind), the rumors about Stu MacherBilly’s partner, one of the ‘Scream’ killers hiding behind the Ghostface mask.

Stu looked pretty dead in the first ‘Scream’ movie (find out where the movie that started it all occupies in our ranking of ‘Scream’ movies), after being stabbed by Billy and having a television thrown at his head by Sidney, among other injuries. But that hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming of a shocking comeback, especially since an original plan for ‘Scream 3’ had him as the mastermind behind the murders.

And now ‘Scream VI’ has been strongly inclined to make fun of fans about Stu’s fatewhich could open the door to a possible return.

As teased in the trailers, the new Ghostface is a bit of a fan of the previous assassins. They even have a whole shrine dedicated to Ghostface, with all kinds of memorabilia and all nine Ghostface suits to date.

Gale discovers its existence and takes Sam, Tara and company to see the sanctuary, hoping to find clues as to who the new killer is. Among the treasures is the same television that was used to end Stu’s reign as Ghostface, something Kirby points out to Mindy, who replies: “If you think he’s dead…”

Most likely it’s just a knowing nod to the endless gossip about whether Stu is really alive, or could be opening the door to a return in the next movie.

We’d be surprised if it was a total resurrection, but maybe Matthew Lillard will reprise the role in the same way as Skeet Ulrich he reprized his role as Billy as a vision. Lillard was one of the voices at the time “for Wes” in the 2022 sequel, and He has always been open to a comeback.

“There is no one who would not like to go back and reprise a role that he played when he was very young and be able to do something different as a man. You don’t get that opportunity often,” he said in May 2020.

Not even the filmmakers of the new ‘Scream’ movies rule it out: the co-director Tyler Gillett has stated to ‘ET’ that “everything is possible” and producer Chad Villella added: “He’s also a fan favorite, so maybe. Who knows?”

Creator Kevin Williamson even suggested a unique way for Stu to return: “There’s always the twin brother theory.”

One thing is certain, Lillard does not reprise his role as Stu in ‘Scream VI’, the best sequel in the saga according to the PICTURES critic, but may well be that the film’s references to him – even in that poster inspired by the subway map – are an omen of something we can expect in the future.

      Surprise Sydney!
