Jimmy Kimmel Talks Will Smith’s Oscar 2022 Slap: Here’s What Happens If Something Like This Happens

The champagne carpet at the 2023 Oscars was filled with glamorous looks and stylish couples, but the awards ceremony was also surrounded by shocking revelations.

In addition to Guillermo del Toro winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, Jimmy Kimmel, host of the gala, issued a warning about Will Smith’s slap (which you can see in ‘Ali’ on ViX+, the premium streaming service from ViX), gave it to Chris Rock in 2022.

Oscars 2023: Jimmy Kimmel recalled Will Smith’s slap in 2022

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel has been tapped to host the 2023 Oscars. With the 2022 Oscars marred by Will Smith’s slap at Chris Rock, Kimmel thought it wise to issue a warning to Oscars viewers about the matter.

While he said the goal of the night is for everyone to have fun, he stressed that any acts of violence throughout the night will have consequences:

“We want them to have fun, feel safe and most importantly, we want me to feel safe. So, we have strict policies.”

With his signature humor, Kimmel joked that whoever commits a violent act at the 2023 Oscars “will win the Oscar for Best Actor”:

“If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any time during the performance, they will be awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor and allowed to give a 19-minute speech.”

The Academy has implemented a judging panel for the 2023 Oscars

Jokes aside, Jimmy Kimmel clarified that the Academy has created a crisis team to react to any unforeseen or violent action that may occur throughout the gala:

“But seriously, the academy has a crisis team. If something unexpected or violent happens during the show, sit back and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the offender a hug.”

The guide ended this clarification with a joke, assuring that if someone in the audience gets angry at a joke, and “decides they want to have fun with it, it won’t be easy.”

Kimmel has previously spoken about this issue, as in an interview with “Time” he said that the team behind the 95th edition of the Oscars is prepared for any possible scenario that could happen at the ceremony:

“We have run several scenarios. Therefore, we hope that we are prepared for anything that we cannot predict at this time, but that we plan in case it happens.”
