The lawyer stresses the importance of getting to know the place well before leaving for a new country
Anyone who thinks they know the United States ― or any other country ― only through the internet screen and what youtubers say, could be very wrong. And if the idea is to leave Brazil and live abroad based solely on this type of information, the risks can be great.
Second Daniel Toledolawyer working in the area of International Law, founder of Toledo e Associados and partner of LeeToledo PLLC, an international law firm with offices in Brazil and the United States, many people plan these changes by only sticking to online references, which is a terrible mistake.
“You have to consider that no one is going to make a video about bad things and post it on the internet. No youtubers mention flooded areas or thefts, only what is beautiful ”, she comments.
Get to know the place first
Toledo recommends that, before moving to another country, the person concerned takes at least 15 days off to get to know the place where he intends to live.
“Talk to your lawyer. Don’t focus on tourist attractions, go downtown, walk around the neighborhood, gather information, talk to the broker in the region. It’s also important to check the safety and cost of living,” he advises.
It also suggests careful observation in cases where the family has children and they need to go to school.
“Go to school, watch the crowd come in. It is important to understand that the environment will intervene and make a person change for the better or for the worse. Also consider whether the place you intend to live has a comfortable structure,” she adds.
Is living far away cheaper?
The lawyer explains that people often choose a remote location because the cost, in theory, is lower. But they forget that they can spend more on petrol, tolls and safety.
“Where you live is extremely important. It’s where your root will be, your security, your safe haven. That is, if you want to build something in this sense, you have to watch much more than what youtubers show ”, she reiterates.
Finally, the expert suggests extensive research into cultural differences within the United States before settling on the country as a place to live.
“People who aren’t used to the rigidity of a culture, for example, tend not to adjust to Texas. There is no Brazilian way here. In that case, it’s better to opt for more flexible places like California. That is, you need to know and feel if the place really makes sense to you,” concludes the lawyer.
