Tonight on TV: When Tarantino Visits a Western

In detective films (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Sin City…), in action films (Kill Bill) but also in war films (Inglorious Basterds), Quentin Tarantino finally realizes his dream of a staged Spaghetti Western. 2012. An opportunity to pay tribute to one of his idols, filmmaker Sergio Leone.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Django Unchained follows the adventures of a German hunter and slave in the American South, two years before the Civil War.

The director’s obsession with violence and gore finds natural ground here. Both brutal and strange, the film relies on disarming contrast, which is its strength.

Another major strength: its prestigious cast with breathtaking performances, from Jamie Foxx as the vigilante hero to Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, through Leonardo DiCaprio as the diabolical antagonist.

Finally, like any self-respecting Tarantino film, Django Unchained is a real treat for cinephiles willing to blink. In addition to Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 Django, to which it directly alludes, the film also invokes Buck and his accomplice, Bossy Niger, Nevada Smith, or even a legitimate son.

With $425 million internationally, Django Unchained is Tarantino’s biggest commercial success. Building on this success, the latter repeated in the Western register in 2016 with Les Huit Salopards.

Ex aequo Along with Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained is AlloCiné internet users’ favorite feature film in Tarantino’s filmography, with an average audience rating of 4.5/5.
