UFC: Dvalishvili likely to turn down bantamweight title fight

In the category, the Georgian fighter would face North American Aljamain Sterling

Georgian Merab Dvalishvili has to make a surprising decision and refuse to fight for the UFC bantamweight (up to 61 kg) belt. The reason is that the fighter doesn’t want to face the current owner of the place, Aljamain Sterling, who is his best friend and main training partner.

– I will fight with anyone (except Aljamain). I want to be busy and fight anyone. Whoever the UFC chooses to fight, I fight. I have no problems. That’s a good deal to have: two best friends and two teammates. My best friend is the champion and I’m one of the contestants. Quite a problem to have as we’re sweeping the divide.”

Dvalishvili’s possible decision does not sit well with UFC president Dana White. The representative said that if he goes ahead with this choice, the story of the Georgian may not have a “good ending”.

– You can still be friends and want what your friend has, you know what I mean? It would be a bad idea for Merab to go that route. Does Merab want a title shot or does Merab prefer people under him to move forward? Take on all these tough guys so you don’t get a shot at the title when you’re next in line. This is a personal decision he has to make. If that’s what he wants to do, I can tell you how this story ends, and it’s not a good ending. He has grown well, he can figure it out himself-he said.

Aljamain Sterling is due to defend his belt against Henry Cejudo, at UFC 288, in Newark, USA on May 6th. Next, a new defense against Sean O’Malley is expected. According to “Combate,” the current bantamweight champion should look to reach new challenges in featherweight, taking the opportunity to make way for his best friend in the current division.
