The local government has carried out a series of actions against the Catholic Church
The government of Nicaragua has announced that it has proposed suspending the country’s diplomatic relations with the Vatican.
The Central American nation’s foreign ministry stance comes shortly after Pope Francis called the local government a “gross dictatorship.”
“Between Nicaragua and the Vatican we propose the suspension of diplomatic relations given the information disseminated by sources apparently close to the Catholic Church”.
The Nicaraguan ministry did not directly quote the Pontiff’s comments in an interview with Infobae, during which he also said that Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega is “deranged”.
In power without interruption since 2007, Ortega has tightened the crackdown on humanitarian and religious entities that criticize his government. In June, for example, he expelled the nuns from the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
In another action by the Ortega government, the country’s police invaded the headquarters of the diocese of Matagalpa to arrest Bishop Rolando José Álvarez, accused of supporting opponents of the regime.
At the end of 2021 Ortega was re-elected for a fourth consecutive term, but the elections were held after the arrest of seven possible opposition candidates. .
