The Last of Us: Part 2 will not be a single season on HBO

The series will need more than one season to adapt the second game, the showrunner reveals

The first season of The Last of Us concluded this Sunday (12), adapting the entire storyline of the first game in the Naughty Dog series, but the same should not happen with the game The Last of Us: Part 2.

While the second season of the series is already confirmed by HBO and filming will begin later this year, showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that the new episodes aren’t expected to cover the entire storyline of the second game.

In an interview with the GQ website, Mazin said that “there is no way” of the second season cover the entire storyline of The Last of Us: Part 2. The co-creator of the games, Neil Druckmann, also pointed out that the second game “is more than a season”.

Later, Mazin explained that “we didn’t say how many there will be, but ‘more than one’ is factually correct“.

Much bigger narrative

The narrative of the second The Last of Us is much more extensive than that of the original game. While the former is around 10 hours long, The Last of Us: Part 2 has almost 24 hours of story, with POV changes and other twists and turns.

Mazin also revealed that the series will have differences from the game. “There will be things that will be different and things that will be the same,” said the director. It is a similar approach to what we saw in the first season. “Some things will be added and enriched. The others will be removed“.

The first season of The Last of Us is available on HBO and HBO Max.
