Directed by Francois Basset (Alexandra Hélé) and written by Mathieu Savignac (Police de Caractères), The Disappearance of a Father is brought to life by Claire Kay and Claire Builra (Face à), who play Céline and Louis respectively.
Their missing mother is played by Nicole Calfan, who was last seen in Gloria. In turn, Loup-Denis Elion, nicknamed Cédric in Scènes de Ménages, slips into Captain Mercier, the policeman in charge of the investigation. The cast includes Bridget Aubrey (Sam) and Jean-Michel Noire (De Gaulle, The Splendor and the Secret).
Is it worth checking out?
Louise and Celine are sisters. And yet, everything is against them. The first is a vet in the small village where he grew up and has returned to live with his mother, Caroline, in time for his struggling couple to get back on their feet.
The other ran away from the city to become a tattoo artist in the city where he collects petty crimes. But when their mother mysteriously disappears, Celine finds her sister to help her in this investigation, which will reveal many family secrets that everyone thought were buried. They’ll have to put their grudges aside to try and find their mother before it’s too late.
Maman Gone, directed by the Claire Keim / Claire Borotra duo, is doing a great job. The two actresses, whose reputations are well established, share an undeniable chemistry that makes their relationship touching while injecting real emotion into the fiction.
Unfortunately, if the police story is well-crafted, it loses steam due to a somewhat muddled resolution that loses the audience. Even if the outcome and the discovery of the culprit managed to surprise us, the conclusion and the revelation of many family secrets complicate the scenario too much.
