Attending the Academy Awards this Sunday, March 12, Dwayne Johnson didn’t shy away from being asked about the failure of Black Adam and his attempt to bring Henry Cavill back as Superman to the DC Universe.
“All I could do, and all we could do when we made Black Adam, was to do our best, surround ourselves with the best people, and make the best movie we could.”He trusted the microphone variety.
All I could do, and all we could do when we created Black Adam, was to give the best.
“Our score with the public was about 90%. The critics took a few hits, but it’s a job that needs it.”he assessed.
Dwayne Johnson then turned to evicting Henry Cavill from the DC Universe despite his appearance as Superman at the end of Black Adam. The Rock was keen to bring the British comedian back as Clark Kent to face him in a possible sequel.
“It’s a little bit like having a professional football team: your quarterback Wins championships, your coach wins championships… but a new owner comes in and says, I don’t want that coach and that quarterback. I will choose another”– explained the rock with bitterness in his voice.
By using this football metaphor, the actor is of course referring to DC’s new bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, giving them a small shot. The latter made the decision to relaunch the universe without Henry Cavill, and it remains noticeably at Dwayne Johnson’s throat.

The artist had the idea to create his own vision of the DCU with Black Adam fighting tooth and nail to get Henry Cavill back as Superman.
A commercial failure for Black Adam
Unfortunately, the feature film was a box office failure, earning only $392 million on a $200 million budget. In addition, the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran at the head of the studio completely disrupted Dwayne Johnson’s plans.
Will Black Adam and Superman face each other one day on the big screen? It seems to be compromised at the moment.
Recall that last January, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new architects of the DC universe, announced the first films and series that will begin.
The first in its program, called Gods and Monsters, is 5 films and 5 series: the legacy of Superman, carried by the as-yet-unknown Clark Kent, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, centered on Batman and Robin, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Swamp Thing.
In anticipation of the new DCU movies, Shazam 2 will be released on March 29 and The Flash on June 14, 2023.
