The president also wants to speed up the demarcation of the lands of these original peoples.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced that it intends to create a financing program for indigenous agriculture, to increase the productive capacity of these peoples. He participated, this Monday (13), in the 52nd General Assembly of Indigenous Peoples, in the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land, in Roraima, and visited a fair set up during the event, at the Lago Caracaranã Regional Center, of organic products , handicrafts and the exhibition of animals reared on indigenous lands.
“This is proof that I saw here at the little fair I just visited, proof that, as long as you have the opportunity, that you have the guaranteed land, and that you have the guaranteed financial incentive to produce, you will possibly produce equal to or better than any other person trying to make a living off the land. There is no way that so much money was lent for agricultural production in that country at that time and that no money came in for indigenous agricultural production.that, when I go back to Brasilia I will treat you with great affection”Lula said.
The delimitation of indigenous lands is also high on the government’s agenda. According to Lula, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai) are carrying out a survey of all the lands that are ready to be demarcated. For the president, guaranteeing land for indigenous peoples is a tool to preserve and combat climate change, as they are like “guardians of the forest” who, in turn, support the maintenance of climate quality.
“We need to delimit them, therefore, before people take possession of them, before they invent false documents, false deeds and claim to own the land. studies, so that the indigenous people can occupy the territory that belongs to them, to increase their productive capacity and so that they can help us take care of the climate, because if we do not take care of the climate, humanity will disappear through irresponsibility And we want to show that this world can produce food without having to cut down another tree in the Amazon, without having to ruin another river, without having to pollute the water more”argued the president.
According to Lula, the meeting of the presidents of the Amazonian countries – Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia – should take place again this year. “To discuss definitively how we will take care of our forests, so that we can transform the biodiversity richness of the entire Amazon region for the benefit of the millions of people who live in the Amazon and are starving because they cannot survive. And who knows? If let’s open up research to competently explore all the richness of biodiversity, perhaps we will find a way out so that the Amazon can guarantee its people decent jobs, decent wages and a better quality of life, as well as keep the forest”he said.
The Council of Indigenous Peoples will also be recreated because, according to Lula, there is no point in establishing policies “from top to bottom”. “It is important for us to respect your organization, so that you can decide what we should do, tell us what is important to do, how we should do it”he said.
The president received a document with the requests made during the event and said he will study what the federal government can respond to. Since Saturday (11), the assembly has brought together some 2,000 indigenous leaders to discuss land protection, the environment and sustainability. Among the leaders are representatives of the Yanomami, Wai Wai, Yekuana, Wapichana, Macuxi, Sapará, Ingaricó, Taurepang and Patamona peoples.
Lula reaffirmed his commitment to withdraw prospectors from indigenous lands, especially indigenous Yanomami land, in Roraima.
The presence of prospectors in these communities has triggered a humanitarian crisis which has led the federal government to declare a Public Health Emergency of National Importance to combat the lack of healthcare for the Yanomami people, who suffer from malnutrition and other diseases preventable.
“The miners have polluted the river water with mercury and now we will have to build an artesian well to bring quality water so that those children can drink contaminated water and not die”the president explained.
According to the president, the government should create small health posts in all indigenous villages to ensure that communities receive regular visits from doctors. Furthermore, the medicines will be distributed free of charge. “It is up to the Brazilian government to ensure that, in addition to the consultation, the examination, the hospital, you have medicines to treat yourself with dignity, as many other people in Brazil have”Lula said.
