President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced that it intends to create a financing program for indigenous agriculture, to increase the productive capacity of these peoples. He participated, this Monday (13), in the 52nd General Assembly of Indigenous Peoples, in the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land, in Roraima, and visited a fair set up during the event, at the Lago Caracaranã Regional Center, of organic products , handicrafts and the exhibition of animals reared on indigenous lands.

“This is proof that I saw here at the little fair I just visited, proof that, as long as you have the opportunity, that you have the guaranteed land, and that you have the guaranteed financial incentive to produce, you will possibly produce equal to or better than any other person trying to make a living off the land.There is no way that so much money was lent for agricultural production in that country at that time and that no money came in for indigenous agricultural production.that, when I go back to Brasilia I will treat you with great affection”Lula said.

The delimitation of indigenous lands is also high on the government’s agenda. According to Lula, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai) are carrying out a survey of all the lands that are ready to be demarcated. According to Lula, the meeting of the presidents of the Amazonian countries – Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia – should take place again this year. “To discuss definitively how we will take care of our forests, so that we can transform the biodiversity richness of the entire Amazon region for the benefit of the millions of people who live in the Amazon and are starving because they cannot survive. The president received a document with the requests made during the event and said he will study what the federal government can respond to. Among the leaders are representatives of the Yanomami, Wai Wai, Yekuana, Wapichana, Macuxi, Sapará, Ingaricó, Taurepang and Patamona peoples.

Lula reaffirmed his commitment to withdraw prospectors from indigenous lands, especially indigenous Yanomami land, in Roraima.

The presence of prospectors in these communities has triggered a humanitarian crisis which has led the federal government to declare a Public Health Emergency of National Importance to combat the lack of healthcare for the Yanomami people, who suffer from malnutrition and other diseases preventable.

“The miners have polluted the river water with mercury and now we will have to build an artesian well to bring quality water so that those children can drink contaminated water and not die”the president explained.

According to the president, the government should create small health posts in all indigenous villages to ensure that communities receive regular visits from doctors.
