Shortly after the world Cup of Qatar, FIFA is already working on new changes for the next edition, in 2026, which will be played in the United States, Mexico and Qatar. Now with 48 selections, the organization will meet this Tuesday, in Kigali, capital of Rwanda, to define the change in the format of the competition.
Previously the proposal would have been 16 groups with three selections each. The idea of going back on the decision is due to the fact that the body notes that several teams have been eliminated with just two games and that the high chances of a draw could benefit some rival selections in the table.
This time, according to Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports, the edition is expected to have 12 groups, made up of four countries. Thus, the two best of each and the eight best third-place finishers would qualify, forming a knockout with 32 entrants.
In addition to the increase from seven to eight matches, another novelty is that the number of matches played would also increase: from 80 – as would happen with the three-group format – to 104. The duration of the tournament would change, being extended to 40 days.
