Before the third season of “The Mandalorian” premiered, creator Jon Favreau promoted the story and that this new installment will focus on the planet Mandalore, its culture and history.
In the second chapter, it was finally possible to see what is left of this planet when Mando/Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Grogu/Baby Yoda and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) set foot on its surface.
The planet was believed to be inhospitable, having been bombarded by the Empire years ago in the Great Purge. But as Bo-Katan tells Grogu, Mandalore wasn’t always a desolate place, once home to a wonderful civilization.
The history of the planet Mandalore before “The Mandalorian”
The planet Mandalore is where the Mandalorians made their home after taming the mythosaurs. However, after a long war with the Jedi, the planet’s surface became arid.
Because of this the Mandalorians built their cities in large domes and were able to prosper for a few years, until the Clone Wars where civil conflict broke out between them.
At one point the ancient Sith Darth Maul captured the Darksaber and became the leader of Mandalore, but at the end of the Clone Wars Bo-Katan, Ahsoka Tano and the Republic managed to take the planet back from their rule.
However, the peace did not last and with the creation of the Galactic Empire the emperor ordered to occupy the planet and not recognize Bo-Katan’s command. He replaced him with Gar Saxon and for years the Mandalorians fought each other.
Years later, Sabine Wren, a young Mandalorian and defector from the Empire, joined the Rebellion with her friends and on an adventure found the Darksaber, which she used to unite the Mandalorian races and retake the planet.
In the end, Sabine recognized Bo-Katan’s leadership and gave him the Dark Saber to lead his people into a new era. Again, however, Bo-Katan’s rule was short-lived, as the Empire’s revenge was devastating.
‘The Mandalorian’: What happened in the Great Purge of Mandalore?
After Bo-Katan and his resistance on Mandalore drove out the Empire, the Emperor ordered Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) to carry out the Great Purge, which consisted of a mass bombing of Mandalore.
The heat from the ships’ bombs caused the sand on the planet’s surface to crystallize, and the Imperial forces looted all the Beskar they could find, and the droids took it upon themselves to kill the survivors.
A similar event was seen when the Empire attacked and destroyed all the cities on the planet Kamino, where the clones were created. Another massive disaster occurred with the planet Alderaan when the Empire unveiled the Death Star.
The surviving Mandalorians called this event the Night of a Thousand Tears and were forced to disperse throughout the galaxy, some hiding and others working as bounty hunters.
After this apocalyptic event, many believed that the planet was cursed and that the surface was toxic, so for many years no one set foot on Mandalore.
It is only when Dean Jarrin, Grogu, and Bo-Katan visit Mandalore that they can see the aftermath of the Great Purge, with creatures mutating to live on the planet and taking on a green glow similar to that of the crystalline surface.
But perhaps the biggest consequence of the Great Purge is that without the Mandalorians, a species that was thought to be extinct has re-emerged, the mythosaur that Dean and Bo-Katan find deep in some mines.
