Destiny 2: Fall of Light is a good expansion, but it could be better

Bungie’s new chapter hits more than it misses, but does it do enough to keep the community engaged?

Destiny began the realm of “live games” way back in 2014, and while its sequel has been steadily continuing from 2017 to here, other games in the genre have tried but fallen by the wayside. Now, Bungie is preparing the beginning of the end of its “ten-year plan” with the recently released expansion The fall of light.

The Fall of Light campaign takes place in a very different world from the one Destiny players are used to: after the (extraordinary) events at the end of the previous expansion, the Guardians arrive on Neptune, where they find a human city, Neomuna, a lost and isolated colony in the outer reaches of the solar system.

The city of Neomuna is colorful and vibrant, with a cyberpunk vibe. There are few characters to interact with in its streets and terraces, which is a shame – they’re stylish and look like something out of a Jack Kirby comic, it would be nice to see more Neptune-dwellers. Story-wise, however, the campaign isn’t the best Destiny 2 has ever received, it almost feels like filler before the events that really matter begin.

The spooky metropolis also features plenty of vertical and traverse navigation, harnessing the powers of the new Filament subclasses, as well as new enemy types, some quite powerful and annoying – yes, Tormentors, I’m talking about you.

The new subclasses are not as nice as the original ones. For those used to playing as Titan, for example, the idea of the character becoming super agile and slicing through enemies with a sword is quite strange. The hunters had already done that, right? But with some advancement, they become more powerful and their skills more rewarding.

Great time to return

New subclasses take time to convince players of their advantages

While Destiny 2 has a loyal community of players who have embraced the season system, increasingly complex episodic storyline, and of course the new weapons, armor, and eventually character subclasses, many people have stopped playing over the years. removed due to lack of time and not being able to accurately address this growing complexity. A new big expansion is usually the ideal time to get back into the game.

One of the proposals of Destiny 2: Fall of Light was precisely to simplify things, to make the progression easier to understand so that all players, whether they are back after a long time away, newcomers or ever present veterans, could enjoy and enjoy what is best about the game: its challenging missions and exciting co-op shooting.

The new enemies are powerful and can frustrate inexperienced players

In that sense, Bungie got what it wanted. The new progression mechanics are better presented, as is the item production system. Adjustments in the way weapon “builds” are done and modifiers have made the game more accessible, not for ease, but to better explain how things work. Even seasoned players will recognize that the mod system was, to say the least, esoteric.

There’s also more variety in the ‘end game’ activities, those missions and tasks for those who have already completed the campaign. There are additional missions with new challenges and scenarios, mainly in finding new exotic weapons. A new raid is now available, the ultimate challenge for experienced players. And the seasonal content, with its focus on ultimately defending Earth against destruction, showcases Bungie’s storytelling potential and should make for a more challenging adventure than the expansion’s campaign.

Considerations

While the new subclasses aren’t the prettiest Destiny 2 has ever received and the Neptune campaign left something to be desired, Fall of Light manages to revamp the game systems and has everything to keep improving over the next few months.

Destiny 2: Fall of Light - Note 8

For veteran Guardians who are always present in the adventures of Destiny 2, the expansion can be a little disappointing at the beginning, but as on many occasions, Bungie hits more than it misses in Fall of Light and has everything to continue to evolve the saga of Light and Darkness towards its grand finale.

Destiny 2: Fall of Light is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
