‘Scream VI’: The identity of Ghostface in the new film

The last two “Scream” movies have starred Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, the Mexican who jumped from a “reality show” to conquer Hollywood, and in each they have dealt with different versions of Ghostface.

In the 2023 film, heroine sisters Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) and Sam (Melissa Barrera) meet in New York, but still in the Big Apple the killer reappears.

Sam, who is the daughter of the original Ghostface, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), has visions of her father and fears that he will become a psychopathic killer like him, but her attempts at healing are interrupted by a new threat.

In the end, inside a movie theater it is discovered that the killers this time are Detective Bailey (Dermot Mulroney), Ethan (Jack Champion) and Quinn (Liana Liberato).

Bailey is the father of Ethan and Quinn, but also the late Richie (Jack Quaid), who was Ghostface in the previous film and besides Sam’s boyfriend, was killed by it. That’s why the family wants to take revenge on her.

Who is Ghostface in the ‘Scream’ movies?

The Ghostface killer is the main antagonist of the ‘Scream’ film series and his costume is a black robe, with a hood and a white mask with the screaming expression similar to Edvard Munch’s famous painting from 1893.

In all English-language films, when the killers behind the mask use a device to alter their voice, it is always the voice of actor Roger L. Jackson.

However, as a result, Ghostface’s identity is unique compared to other famous killers in horror movies. Unlike Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, in “Scream” the villain is more of a symbol than a person.

Ghostface, who are not always the same man or woman, do not have a specific origin story or trauma to justify their death. But he is always connected to Sidney Prescott or the immediate family of one of the killers.

In the first Scream movie in 1996, Ghostface was Billy Loomis (Sidney’s friend) and his partner Stu. in the sequel she was the mother of Billy and Mickey Altieri, seeking revenge and fame, respectively.

In “Scream 3” a pattern emerged and Ghostface embodied the revenge or fame that people sought under the mask. In the film, Roman Bridger, Sidney’s half-brother, is the killer and wants to become a celebrity.

In “Scream 4” it is now the turn of Sidney’s niece, Jill Roberts, as well as Charlie Walker, who is a fan of the films in the saga called “Stab” and wants to commit murders like in them.

While in ‘Scream 5’ the love of horror movies and the search for fame leads Richie Kirsch (Sam Carpenter’s boyfriend) and Amber Freeman to commit crimes under the mask of Ghostface.
