“I lost my father almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of movies and I wouldn’t be doing this movie right now without him,” Gunn wrote in the sequel. “It’s been a long road to this period I was offered the Superman years ago — I initially said no because I didn’t have a unique, fun, exciting way to give Superman the dignity he deserved.”
However, the writer-director explained his change of heart: “Then, just under a year ago, I saw an entry, in many ways centered around Superman’s legacy – as his aristocratic Kryptonian parents tell us and her parents from the Kansas farm she is and the choices she makes.
So finally I decided to write the screenplay. But I was reluctant to direct, despite constant urging from Peter Safran and others to commit (sorry, Peter). Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend more than two years directing it, especially something of this magnitude. But in short, I love this script and am incredibly excited to begin this journey.
