The judge acquits Guido Mantega and the former president of the BNDES in the Operation Rialzista operation

Judge Marcus Vinicius Reis Bastos, of the 12th Federal Criminal Court of the Federal District, acquitted former president of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Luciano Coutinho, former minister Guido Mantega and his son, Leonardo Mantega , in the continuation of Operation Bullish.

They were charged with conspiracy, corruption, fraudulent management, financial malfeasance and money laundering.

The trial was dismissed at first instance due to lack of evidence. “There is no evidence in the file to support the ministerial narrative,” the federal judge wrote.

The ruling said the complaint was based “solely” on the “generic and empty” statements made by businessman Joesley Batista, of the JBS Group, in his award-winning statement.

Lawyer Aloísio Lacerda Medeiros, who represents Luciano Coutinho, says the decision “ends the unjust accusation” and that the client has been the victim of “absurd accusations”.

Grievance

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) accused Mantega of influencing the then chairman of the BNDES to carry out financial transactions to favor JBS in exchange for bribes.

During the first two terms of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Guido Mantega was minister of planning, finance and also commanded the public bank.

The scheme allegedly embezzled billions through irregular grants of financial support from subsidiary BNDESPar to JBS Group between 2007 and 2009, according to the complaint.

“This decision puts an end to the unjust accusation that in the management of Luciano Coutinho as president of the BNDES there was a ‘black box’ also aimed at benefiting Joesley Batista’s JBS group. This was strongly supported by the former president Bolsonaro who, during his government, has always supported this levity which today has been largely unmasked by the irreproachable ruling of the Federal Court of the Federal District which removed all the absurd accusations of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office”.
