Personal shopper services bring Brazil and the United States together

Assisted shopping movement by Brazilians in destinations like Orlando, US, is singled out by expert as a key component to maintaining local economy while tourist fares have not yet reached pre-pandemic levels

According to recent data from United States National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO), Orlando is the most visited city in the United States by Brazilians. In 2019, more than 880 thousand Brazilians were present, forming the largest international tourist group in the city. Famous above all for its leisure complexes, another reason that drives different types of travelers to want to visit the destination is shopping.

One Semrush’s notean online visibility management platform, shows that the average monthly volume of online searches and interests by Brazilians in the Florida region was 5.8 million between March 2021 and 2022. In the ranking of the most searched attractions, the “Florida Outlet” was in the TOP 10, in ninth place.

Carolina Capello, entrepreneur and founder of Order stuff, a company specializing in personal shoppers in the United States, explains that this type of service has been sought after by traveling Brazilians. “Orlando is home to well-known shopping malls such as the Mall at Millenia and the Florida Mall, as well as having a large number of outlets, where you can find discounts on various brands consumed by Brazilians,” explains Carolina. The professional also points out that there is interest not only in clothing and accessories, but also in fast food items that are not found in Brazil.

“The flow of Brazilians to Orlando is intense, and once people have a shopping experience here, they want to repeat it. This combination has made the destination popular for those looking for a differentiated shopping experience,” says the personal shopper.

Industry growth during the pandemic

According to the entrepreneur, it was during the period of social isolation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic that the service had a significant increase. “The restriction on entry into various countries, including the USA, has increased the presence of Brazilians in the so-called buying groups”, Carolina explains.

According to the information of a research conducted by the QualiBest Institute, 40% of upper-class women in São Paulo, which is the main consumption center for luxury products in Brazil, have increased their online purchases during the pandemic. Another 23% continued to buy the same amount as before, while 12% became new buyers of products on the Internet.

The creator of Encomende Things claims that this change in consumer habits has generated a 40% increase in demand for this type of service. “At the same time, the scale of personal shopper activities has been a key component in maintaining America’s local economy by generating consumer demand that would not exist with closed borders,” Carolina comments. The expectation of Orange County, of which Orlando is a part, is resume the volume of tourists who visited the region in the pre-pandemic period only in 2024.

Corporate strategies for the coming years

Encomende Things is officially registered in the United States and was created with the aim of storing and redirecting purchases to Brazil. It tripled its revenue in 2022 and has since expanded its team frequently to assist in purchasing. In 2023 the picture is already 150% bigger.

Carolina explains that the consumer can make purchases and keep them in storage, to collect them when he visits the destination or even redirect to Brazil. This transport is carried out through partner logistics companies, which carry out the customs process required by the regulations of the country of entry.

Currently, the team visits at least five physical stores a week and serves an average of 250 active customers, including those who choose to be part of buying groups and those who prefer individual attention. Plans for 2023 include expanding the business, such as trips to other US states. “The first pilot, built at the Six Flags complex in the state of Georgia, was successful. The expectation is that the next release will reach California,” says the creator of Encomende Stuff.
