The 73rd FIFA Congress, which is taking place in Rwanda, in Africa, and which re-elected Gianni Infantino for another four years at the helm of the body, also had a good balance for Brazilian football. With the support of all the other presidents of the South American national federations that make up Conmebol, the president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues, now occupies a seat on the FIFA Council.
The position had been represented by CBF vice president Fernando Sarney since 2015, when the US Justice Department launched an operation to fight corruption in world soccer and arrested then CBF president José Maria Marin in Switzerland. . Then, his deputy Marco Polo Del Nero was indicted by the Americans, accused of various crimes.
At the time, the manager for Brazil on the FIFA Executive Committee – which changed its name to the FIFA Council in 2016 – was Del Nero. As his situation became delicate due to the grievances that were mounting against him, the solution found by the CBF was to appoint Fernando Sarney for the position at FIFA.
It had been 11 years, therefore, that Brazil’s seat in Fifa had not been occupied by a president of the CBF. The last to have that power was Ricardo Teixeira, who however resigned in 2012 from the CBF and then from FIFA because he was also indicted by the US court, in the wake of the same investigations against Del Nero and Marin.
This Thursday, Ednaldo Rodrigues was presented to representatives of the 211 national federations at the FIFA Congress. In a short speech, he thanked them for the welcome.
“I am very happy for the trust of all FIFA members and my Conmebol colleagues for their support in my work of rebuilding Brazilian football in my first year at the helm of the CBF. FIFA can count on my loyalty, dedication and professionalism during this new mandate.”
The FIFA Council consists of 37 members and is responsible for the entity’s strategic decisions for world football. In addition to Gianni Infantino, it includes eight vice-presidents and 28 other members elected by affiliated associations. Each of them remains in office for four years and can be re-elected two more times.
