China spies on Top Gun 2 fake plane: mistaken for one by army

“Top Gun” premiered 36 years ago and its cast has changed a lot. Now, Tom Cruise is back for the sequel, which promises to be full of action scenes.

However, it is known that “Top Gun: Maverick” has a supersonic plane, the Darkstar, which looks so real that it caught the attention of China.

Although in the new film we will see different planes, most of which were actually US Navy ships, there is one in particular that is not.

It’s the Darkstar, a supersonic aircraft built specifically for the movie, which can not fly. However, according to Top Gun 2 producer Jerry Bruckheimer for Sandboxx News, the plane looked so real that China was redirecting a satellite to spy on it:

The Navy told us that a satellite of Chinese origin turned to a different path to photograph the plane. They thought it was true. This is how it looks true.

But that the plane from “Top Gun: Maverick” looks so true to a point that it must be spied on by the Chinese government is no accident.

What is Darkstar, the plane from “Top Gun: Maverick”?

The controversial plane that can be seen in “Top Gun 2” is inspired by an aircraft built in the middle of the Cold War by Lockheed Martin, an American aerospace, weapons, defense and information security and technology company worldwide.

The SR-71, also known as the “Blackbird” or “Blackbird”, was a supersonic reconnaissance aircraft capable of exceeding three times the speed of sound. He could make a trip from London to the United States in just two hours.

Its main function was to carry out reconnaissance missions, although in many cases it was intercepted by Soviet forces. However, it was only active between 1964 and 1990, as it was supposed to have high operating costs.

According to “Top Gun 2” producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski, they actually worked with engineers from Stunk Works, the official nickname for Lockheed Martin Advanced Development Programs.

In this sense, there is no doubt why it seems so true, to the point that China wanted to spy on it. Well, in the end, it might be that for the Chinese government it was not a simple plane, but a possible sketch for upgrading the SR-71, like the Lockheed Martin SR-72.

Regarding the help received from the production of “Top Gun” by Lockhead Martin, Kosinski said:

The reason we approached Skunk Works is because we wanted to build the most realistic supersonic aircraft we could. In fact, as you can see, we built it on a large scale in collaboration with them… But the reason it seems so true is because it was Skunk Works engineers who helped us design it. These are the same people who work on real planes that helped us design Darkstar for this movie.
