Criminals take advantage of the income tax delivery period to impersonate the Federal Revenue Office in messages and apply scams; see how to prevent
The deadline for submitting the declaration of Income Tax (IR) This year started last Wednesday, the 15th, and will last until May 31st. During the period, fake messages, where scammers impersonate the IRS and point to malicious links, they can confuse the contributor.
According to the Agenzia delle Entrate, false messages involving the agency are always circulating, which, however, proliferate with greater scope and speed during the period of delivery of the Taxes. Therefore, it is important that the taxpayer is always attentive: the Revenue Agency specifies that the reports it sends by email or message do not have access links.
Arriving via WhatsApp, SMS, and most importantly, via email, messages may state that there are pending issues in previous years’ returns, for example, or some other issue that needs to be settled by the taxpayer. Another type of message communicates a fake IR refund payment. Typically, the messages ask the payer to access a link, and upon clicking, the user can have their data stolen or end up installing a malicious program on their computer, capable of stealing personal and financial data from the machine.
In emails, fraudulent messages often use improper copies of federal revenue logos to give a misleading impression of authenticity. See below Federal Revenue guidelines to avoid falling for scams.
How to protect yourself from fake IR messages
The Revenue Agency reminds that taxpayers must be aware and cautious with messages received on behalf of the entity and that notices sent by email or message do not have access links. “Every contact/communication from the Revenue Agency directs the taxpayer to go to the official page,” she says. “Any message directing you to go somewhere other than the official page is fake.” You can access the official Revenue page in this link.
Therefore, if a message is received on behalf of the Revenue Agency, the orientation is to access the official page directly, through which it is possible to access the various services of the agency and also the eCAC portal, with secure access with the gov.br login. On the e-CAC Portal, all the information relating to the taxpayer’s income tax, the required procedures, pending issues or necessary adjustments can be consulted.
The Revenue Agency also directs to:
- Do not open or reply to suspicious messages;
- Do not open attached files, which may be executable programs to cause harm to your computer or acquire user information;
- Do not click on any links;
- And delete the message immediately.
Other doubts can be clarified through the units of the Revenue Agency or by the other service channels of the organ.
