If I exist, it must be a fan

“This is not a work of fiction. Any resemblance to real people, living or dead, or real events is intentional.” It is with his words that every episode of Swarm, the new series created by Donald Glover – aka Childish Gambino – begins.

After Atlanta, the artist is still interested in the music scene, but through the prism of the fan community and its excesses. In this thriller he created with playwright and screenwriter Janine Nabers (Atlanta, The Witcher), who directs as showrunner, we follow Dre’s descent into hell.

A die-hard fan of pop star Ni’Jah, with a similar music and aesthetic to Beyoncé (fans of the Beyhive, “Beyoncé’s hive” will notice plenty of winks).

His obsession with his idol leads his life down a very dark path, to the point where he turns to murder. Life’s inconveniences and many encounters will push her to the limit, and the young woman will now have a very bloody answer to each problem.

With a similar approach and aesthetic to Atlanta, this new series also offers an atmosphere that straddles the line between comic and horror, as Dre’s madness is as terrifying as it is hilarious. Watch out for those who aren’t part of Ni’Jah’s fan base called the “Swarm”, he’s going after all the pop star’s haters and naysayers.

Dre owes much to the brilliant interpretation of Dominic Fishback (The Deuce, Judas and the Black Messiah), who carries the series on his shoulders. Swarm also deserves credit for its writing, which featured a certain Malia Obama, one of Barack and Michelle Obama’s daughters. As in Atlanta, the Swarm plot also allows for some commentary on American society, its politics, and racial issues to be revealed.

The Swarm series is available in its entirety on Prime Video.
