More than 300 arrested for protests in France

Thousands protest against the pension reform

More than 300 people were arrested last Thursday (16) in several cities in France due to protests against the country’s pension reform.

Of the 310 people arrested by French law enforcement, 258 were in the capital Paris. Demonstrations were also held in Lyon, Rennes and Nantes.

After the local government’s controversial decision on the matter, the officers had to use tear gas and water jets to contain the protesters who were in the “Place de la Concorde”.

A police toll estimated that just over 50,000 people took part in demonstrations across the country. The acts allegedly injured at least 54 officers.

“The opposition is legitimate and demonstrations are also legitimate, but chaos and unrest are not,” French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin warned RTL.

Local police have received reports of mannequins being burned and several public buildings being stoned.

The French capital has announced that at least 10,000 tons of garbage are being abandoned in the city due to the strike by urban cleaning professionals, which has lasted for more than 10 days.
