The Last Duel, directed by Ridley Scott in 2021, is now available on Disney+. Averaging a 4.1 AlloCiné audience rating, this historical drama benefits from a 5-star cast featuring Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Adam Driver and Ben Affleck.

Told in Kurosawa’s classic Rashomon style – giving the characters different points of view – it tells the story of the real-life rivalry between Jean de Carrouge and Jacques Le Gris. The first one protected his wife’s dignity, the second one raped her. All in medieval France.

The duel in question is the result of a court martial that takes place after Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) is accused of raping Marguerite de Tibouville (Jodie Comer), the wife of Jean de Carouge (Matt Damon). Based on the book by Eric Jagger, the feature film was directed by Damon, Affleck and Nicole Holofsener.

Released in October 2021, The Last Duel was a commercial failure in France and the United States, even if it was well received by critics. Often, movies that flop at the box office find new life on video and/or streaming. We bet it will be the same for the final duel.

Although Ridley Scott has had a number of hits, he has also had a few flops in movies that didn’t do well at the box office but found new life later on. This is the case of Kingdom of Heaven, with Orlando Bloom, which became a cult film, especially thanks to the long version of the director’s cut that is circulating today.

Anyway, The Last Duel is a real cinematic proposition that defies the standardized production among the big-budget films currently ruling the box office. Despite its medieval setting, Scott’s film is profoundly modern. Her Rashomon-style narration serves the character of Marguerite de Tibouville, whose truth is revealed in her segment, the third, which closes the film.

The Last Duel was supposed to be a massive hit when it came out. It had all the arguments: with its budget of 100 million dollars, it is a real blockbuster, which also marks Ridley Scott’s return to the epic and historical genre. It’s also the on-screen reunion of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Plus, with every studio wanting the movie, there was a bidding war before it was written.

Now is the time to correct this injustice.
