Italy honors the victims of the Covid pandemic on national day

The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, paid tribute this Saturday (18) to the people who died of the new coronavirus in the country, on the occasion of the third “National Day in Memory of the Victims of the Pandemic”.

“On this day, I renew my feelings of solidarity for the pain of the families of the victims and, at the same time, I express my gratitude to all those who have helped to contain such a serious, sudden and widespread situation, danger, in such a way to jeopardize global public health,” he said.

According to the Italian head of state, “the effort made to avoid the consequences of the pandemic – not yet completely eradicated – constitutes a heritage of fundamental values to be preserved in order to be able to face any challenge of international importance”.

On 18 March 2020, Italy witnessed one of the saddest and most evocative images of the pandemic in the country: the queue of Army trucks to transport the bodies of the victims to Bergamo, one of the epicenters of the crisis, to the crematoria and cemeteries of other regions.

The “National Day in Memory of the Victims of the New Coronavirus” provides for a minute’s silence to remember the victims of the disease, as well as a series of tributes especially in the city of Bergamo.

“March 18, 2020 remains in the memory as one of the most dramatic moments in the history of the Republic. A global threat, with unknown characteristics, which has affected all countries, motivating institutional actions and emergency scientific initiatives, including at an international level, activating health protection systems and reawakening feelings of widespread solidarity”, concluded Mattarella.

In Bergamo, the local authorities held a ceremony marked by the laying of a wreath of yellow and red flowers in front of the tombstone of the city’s monumental cemetery, in the presence of the Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and the Health Minister Orazio Schillaci.

During the homage, the prayer that Ernesto Olivero, founder of the Youth Missionary Service, dedicated to those who died from Covid-19 was read. Also present were the regional councilor for welfare, Guido Bertolaso, and the mayor of Bergamo, Giorgio Gori.

Afterwards, the celebrations continued at Parque alla Trucca for the inauguration of a place of memory.

On Friday (17), the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that it plans to reduce its maximum alert level for Covid-19 this year, estimating that the pandemic could soon pose a threat similar to that of influenza seasonal. .
