Mania Series: We Let Intoxication Les Gouttes de Dieu, Adaptation of the Cult Manga on Wine

Forty-four volumes have been published, with almost 2 million copies sold worldwide: the Japanese manga Les Gouttes de Dieu is a real success. So it’s no surprise that Apple TV has revived the rights to adapt it to the streaming platform.

But the ambition is bigger than that, because it is a Japanese, French and American co-production that takes us from France to the land of the rising sun. The screenwriters parted ways with Tadashi Agi and Shu Okimoto’s seinen with a French hero and no longer a Japanese one.

Les Gouttes de Dieu began when the world of gastronomy and savoir-faire was mourning: Alexandre Léger, creator of the famous Léger wine guide and guardian of oenology, had recently died at the age of 60 at his residence in Tokyo. He is survived by a daughter living in Paris.

A young woman goes to Tokyo. While reading the will, he discovers that his father has amassed the world’s largest wine collection. In addition to claiming this inheritance, Camille will have to meet a young and brilliant oenologist, Tomine Ise, whom Alexandre trained and whom he describes in his will as his “spiritual son”.

AlloCiné had the chance to discover the first two episodes that were shown at the Series Mania festival, where the series is presented in official competition. And we can say that he has a good chance of winning the prize.

Oded Ruskin’s realization manages to pay homage to the creativity of the manga and transport us into a world of tastes, flavors and textures thanks to the visual ideas found quite well.

The cultural “clash” between the characters of Camille and Issei is quite nice to watch: the one who doesn’t drink a drop of alcohol (for reasons as funny as it leads to quite comical situations) and the one who has to learn to tame himself again. He sniffs, and he with his Japanese coldness that shows no emotions. But the series scratches the surface to reveal the traumas that eat away at them.

Fleur Geffrier (Professor T) and Tomohisa Yamashita (Alice in Wonderland) are incredibly accurate… and funny for the former because Camille’s character is funny despite herself. On the French side, actors Stanley Weber, Gustave Kervern and Cécile Blois complete the cast.

AppleTV+ will first offer its subscribers 8 episodes of Les Gouttes de Dieu on France Télévision.
