Is this the beginning of the end for Grey’s Anatomy? After the loss of Ellen Pompeo, who said goodbye to Meredith Grey’s character a few weeks ago, it’s now another doctor’s turn to say “goodbye” at the Gray Sloan memorial.
This Friday, our colleagues at Entertainment Weekly did report that Kelly McCreary, who joined the medical series at the end of Season 10 as Dr. Maggie Pierce, Meredith’s half-sister, was going to leave Grey’s Anatomy.
Its final episode will air in the United States on April 13. But like Ellen Pompeo, Kelly McCreary is expected to return as Gray Sloan in future episodes.
“After nine seasons, I said goodbye to Maggie Pierce and the Gray Sloan family. It was an honor to be a part of such a legendary television institution as Grey’s Anatomy.“, the actor’s statement says.
“I will always be grateful Shonda Rhimes, Christa Vernoff And ABC for giving me this opportunity, and the incredible Grey’s Anatomy fans for their support. Spending nine years exploring a character from the ground up while reaching an international audience through impactful stories is a rare gift..”
“I have had the opportunity to collaborate, learn and be inspired by many brilliant artists both in front of and behind the camera. Playing Maggie Pearce has been one of the true joys of my life and I leave with deep gratitude for every step of this journey. I can’t wait to start the next chapter and find out what the future holds.”
Like Ellen Pompeo, Maggie Pearce’s departure was premeditated by the scriptwriters. According to Deadline, the actor contacted producers to inform them of his desire to leave Grey’s Anatomy to pursue new projects.
In this 19th season, intrigue was written around Maggie as the character’s final chapter in Gray Sloan in preparation for her release. The Last Ark mainly revolves around Maggie and Winston’s (Anthony Hill) marital problems, which worsen over the episodes.
Known for her perfectionism and will to control everything, Maggie was introduced in the last episode of season 10 of Grey’s Anatomy. In the next episode, we learned that she was the biological daughter of Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Meredith’s mother, Alice Gray (Kate Burton).
Very quickly, the character became one of the heavy cores of the medical series. How the writers will justify this departure remains to be seen. Will Maggie decide to join Meredith in Boston? See you on April 13 to find out.
One thing is for sure, with this fresh start, the future of Grey’s Anatomy looks increasingly uncertain, with ABC yet to announce if the series will be renewed for a 20th season.
Especially since showrunner Krista Vernoff, who has been at the helm since Season 14, announced last January that she was also saying goodbye to Grey’s Anatomy at the end of Season 19. The producers decide to make a new burst of episodes. Without any members of the Gray family? To be continued…
