It’s an undeniable fact: Men in Black is one of the most profitable franchises in American cinema. This adaptation of the comic book of the same name allowed Sony to earn more than 1.5 billion dollars with its first three films. It’s enough to convince the studios to upgrade the box office with the fourth opus, which hit our theaters in June 2019.
Sony bet on new faces, not so new as after the two main roles were given to bank owner Chris Hemsworth and his sidekick from Thor, Tessa Thompson.
We rely on the humor of the former and their alchemy to convince audiences to come to theaters. In this new adventure, they face the biggest threat they’ve faced yet: a mob within the Men In Black organization.
Bad luck for the studios, Men In Black: International was not well received by the press and audiences, as evidenced by its AlloCiné record, where the film received a 2.3/5 from both sides.
In particular, he is accused of “Its somewhat sparse plot“(Geek Magazine) Who”easily forgotten“(CinemaTeaser) in the style of Neuralizer. In France, it will not exceed a million (966161 to be exact).
This fourth opus directed by Gary Gary did not shine at the box office and became the lowest grossing film of the franchise. Here’s what Tom Rothman, president of Sony Pictures, had to say at the launch:
“Did we miss our shot? Men in Black: International isn’t that big of a financial disappointment, as it will ultimately bring in between $245 and $300 million at the worldwide box office (on a $110 million budget). But that’s obviously not what we were aiming for with this license reset.(Business Insider).
Three years later, no further projects are being considered…
