More than 900 hair styling ointments are released by Anvisa

The return of these brands to the market takes place after serious cases of eye injuries have been recorded, due to intoxication by one of the components of these products.

Forty days after banning the sale of any type of hair styling ointment in Brazil, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) released, this Monday (20), the sale of 930 products of the type. More than 1,500 remain irregular.

The return of these brands to the market comes after the regulatory agency investigated a number of occurrences in users of pomades, used to braid, style or fix hair.

Serious cases of eye injuries have been recorded, due to intoxication by one of the components of the products. There has been an increase in demand for ophthalmological emergencies due to high eye poisoning, which in some cases has led to temporary blindness. In contact with the eyes, the product can cause burns to the cornea.

The full list of brands released this Monday can be found at place from Anvisa, on the internet. Those that are not mentioned continue with the prohibited sale because they have shown a concentration of the substance that causes eye irritation, greater than 20%.

During the entire Anvisa investigation, on the various cases of eye irritation, more than 600 regularization processes for ointments of this type were cancelled. Approximately 2,500 modeling brands were analysed. According to the health authority, more than 630 authorizations for the sale of these ointments have already been canceled since the beginning of the year due to various irregularities, such as the content of prohibited ingredients exceeding the limit.
