The Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, spoke by telephone this Monday (20) with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, to defend the need to strengthen European support for Ukraine.
In a note, the Italian government believes that a “new 360-degree signal of support for Ukraine” should be a “priority” for the next European Council, which will take place on 23 and 24 March.
Among other things, the two leaders pledged for a “rapid implementation” of the decisions taken at the summit last February for a “finally European management of migratory flows”.
The migration crisis is one of the priorities of the Meloni government, given that it has to manage the arrival of international migrants who usually leave from North Africa. According to official data, so far over 20,300 people have reached the Italian coasts.
Finally, Meloni and Scholz spoke of “European solutions for the competitiveness of the continent’s economies, through the full use of appropriate EU instruments”. .
