The event transforms Porto Alegre into the national capital of skateboarding

STU Nacional brought together 50,000 people in a skate park on the coast of Guaíba

The Porto Alegre stage of the STU National ended this Sunday 19th, definitively putting the capital of Rio Grande do Sul on the Brazilian skateboarding map. Over three days of competition, more than 100 athletes competed at Skate Park da Orla, which received an audience of 50,000, according to an estimate by the STU platform.

The winners were announced on Sunday, followed by an awards ceremony, attended by the athletes, Mayor Sebastião Melo, and the Secretary of Sport, Leisure and Youth, Débora Garcia. Below is the list of winners.

“The STU consolidates Porto Alegre as the city of skateboarding. We already have the largest track in Latin America, an important factor. Skateboarding is a sport that attracts young people and sport has the power to transform people’s lives. The The native beauty of the shore, next to the Guaíba, was an element that led to this success. And the STU didn’t just happen on the shore, it happened in Restinga, at the IAPI” – Mayor Sebastião Melo.

According to the mayor, one of the challenges is expanding public capacity. “We had limited space. A lot of people wanted to see it and couldn’t, so we need to fix that for the next few years,” concluded Melo.

“This edition of the STU National was a historical landmark, which consecrated Porto Alegre as the national capital of skateboarding”, celebrates the sports secretary.

According to Débora, there is a legacy that goes beyond sport. “It was a social integration event from which other skateparks in Porto Alegre benefited, such as Restinga and IAPI. The participation of paraskate athletes was also important,” says Débora.

Revitalized rinks – In an unprecedented partnership in Brazil, STU National and the Porto Alegre City Hall promoted the revitalization of two traditional maneuvering stages for skaters in the capital. The Restinga runway received repairs to the pavement and concrete joints which showed wear or material loss. Also redone the painting of the surface of the ramps and obstacles.

In the North Zone, the IAPI runway underwent a general renovation over an area of 4,000 m2. In addition to replacing damaged stones, part of the track has been updated by building new obstacles reminiscent of street skateboarding, such as a fire hydrant and painting a crosswalk.

Social Projects – Children and teenagers from three initiatives that have skateboarding as their motto took part in the STU. On Friday 17th, members of the Seja Livre Skate Project, from the Mário Quintana neighborhood, attended the event. Saturday was the turn of the children of the Apampa Skate Life project, from Restinga; On Sunday, in turn, the little skaters of Pé na Tábua, in the Bom Jesus neighborhood, visited the STU. Every day, Carris carried the teams.

Services – The Public Transportation and Traffic Company (EPTC) has hired 100 traffic and transportation officers and 20 vehicles to ensure road safety in the region during the skate circuit. The EPTC video monitoring and mobility control center and servers monitored traffic at pedestrian crossings and waterfront approaches, while also guiding pedestrians and drivers to minimize traffic impacts.

The Municipal Department of Water and Sewage (Dmae) has carried out an environmental education action, offering visitors ecobags in exchange for plastic bags. The goal is to reduce the use of plastics that cause problems for the environment. The action is part of the I Take Care of the Trash campaign. I take care of the water, part of the A Gente Vive initiative. We take care of the town hall.

The Municipal Department of Urban Cleaning (DMLU) has also strengthened the cleaning of section 3 of the Guaíba seafront, with sweepers working in the space during the national STU program.
