Macron survives no-confidence vote amid protests

The French government survived this Monday (20) a no-confidence vote tabled against President Emmanuel Macron after the announcement of the pension reform provoked the biggest protests in the country in recent years.

The independent party LIOT’s “cross-party” no-confidence motion voted in the French National Assembly failed to get the 287 votes needed to overthrow Macron’s government and cancel the reform proposal. Of the 577 lawmakers, 278 voted for it.

Thus nine votes fell short of no confidence in Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne’s government, less than half of what was thought to be the “margin of safety” of the majority.

After the vote, there were new clashes between demonstrators and police near the National Assembly and several objects were thrown at the police. In response, tear gas was released.

In recent days, the pension reform proposed by Macron, which postpones the retirement age from 62 to 64 until 2030 and brings forward the contribution requirement of 43 years to 2027 – against 42 years – to receive a full pension, has caused a series of violent protests across the country. .
