Waze was the winner in the “Best urban mobility experience” category of the sixth edition of the Canaltech Award, overtaking navigation and transport apps
Waze has become an indispensable part of the routine of many Brazilians who need to travel for work or leisure, and has emerged as the best urban mobility experience in the world. 6th Canaltech Award. Google’s service managed to beat other industry giants like Uber, 99, Google Maps and Apple Maps.
Purchased by Google in 2013 for $1.1 billion, the GPS and navigation tool was a public favorite and won the popular vote. In the last decade it has never stopped growing: the app has received functionality from Maps, but has never abandoned its collaborative essence of guiding people through cities, streets and highways around the world.
Besides being useful, Waze also performs occasional actions aimed at the Brazilian audience, such as adding character voices and thematic icons. At Carnival 2023, for example, Ivete Sangalo was chosen as the entry to lead the revelers along the paths of the foliage. During the World Cup, the Brazilians were able to listen to the directions of the content creator Mason’s Glove.
Fundamental for urban mobility
Interestingly, the urban mobility category of the award was dominated by passenger apps like Uber and 99 in the first four years. At the 2022 awards, the Google Maps broke this hegemony making you more relevant to people.
Now, it seems that the segment has really gained a different concept in the mind of the public, which has enshrined another location app. Waze’s win may have been driven by the increased need to use the car. With more difficulty getting rides on transit apps and with the end of social distancing, passengers are back to using their own vehicles to transit through cities.
