Tonight on TV: This completely overlooked comedy with Vincent Cassel deserves your attention

Le Bonheur des uns… is the fourth film by French director, screenwriter and actor Daniel Cohen, who adapts his own play, which was never performed. Following the 2012 gastronomic comedy Comme un chef starring Jean Reno and Michael Yun, the director signs here to discuss a caustic and comical feature film.

Leah, Mark, Karine and Frances are two pairs of longtime friends who find their lives turned upside down when Leah, the smartest of them all, becomes a famous best-selling author.

Leah’s happiness quickly brings trouble to her “friends”, who envy her success: resentment and cruelty now mark their relationship. The embittered suddenly decide to become artists too…

Some people’s happiness… that’s why others envy them! The Comedy of Manners offers a beautiful reflection on familiarity and is primarily about friendship: but not one with a capital “A”, which can be full of hypocrisy and bitterness.

In Leah’s success, those around her see their own failure and their greed, which prompts them to expose themselves to daylight and try – in vain – to exist, amid the validation of their reticent friend.

Another strength of the feature film, apart from its poignant subject matter, is its five-star cast with supporting cast. In front of the perfect Vincent Cassel in the skin of a falsely self-confident, misogynist and egotistical executive, the attractive and withdrawn Berenice Bejot shines, the charm of the film, without a doubt, from a shy salesman to an acclaimed author.

On the other hand, the couple Florence Forrest and Francois Damian are having fun while both try to reform their existence. The former is excellent in childish jealousy, the latter charming and funny as a devoted husband who is also looking for an artistic field in which to excel.

With funny and brutal lines, this acerbic comedy about a group of (too) human friends who have been overlooked during the pandemic finally deserves your attention.
