In an interview with the American site The Hollywood Reporter, shortly after the premiere of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, screenwriters Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan praised each other and the film. The two chatted about the creative processes, the collaboration, DC’s takeover, the feature film’s special participation, and the future of the franchise.
In Brazil, Shazam! two premiered March 16.
Shazam! two
the sequence of Shazam! begins two years after its predecessor. Now, after discovering his powers and joining a family, Billy Batson (young Asher Angel / adult Zachary Levi) faces the problems of coming of age and reconciling his life with his alter ego. superhero. Together with their families, they are forced to face the goddess daughters of Atlas, played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler, who have come to Earth to recover their powers.
Co-written by Gayden and Morgan, the second film in the series continued the comic book hero’s story and provided references and special moments for DC fans.
The writing process of Shazam!
As the screenwriters said in the interview, Henry Gayden was already part of the film team and Chris Morgan was invited by the production to collaborate on the text. Morgan says the invitation was undeniable and the writer’s ability to connect to teenage experiences is wonderful.
I’m a huge fan of Henry’s writing. He has this kind of superpower of being able to do a teenage voice that I just don’t have access to. My teenage years were very difficult for me, so I just erased those years. But, for some reason, [Henry] can enter there. Remember the heartache of growing up and all the little moments that I blocked. He’s able to bring it to the present day with the movie and the characters. I’m a bit in awe of it.
Chris Morgan
Together, Gayden and Morgan were tasked with continuing to build the mythology of the film and story, as well as reconcile the development of all the heroes.
The Shazam 2 script (spoiler alert!!)
As for the mythology and plot of Shazam! Fury of the Godsthe duo intended to show different perspectives and not create a recycled script.

The change of DC management and the future of Shazam
Shazam! Fury of the Gods comes shortly after the announcement of a takeover at DC Comics late last year: James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over as CEOs of the company, an arm of Warner Bros.
The authors tell of having learned of the internal movement with the public and that, while appreciating the collaboration with Walter Hamada (former president of the DC), they approved the new leaders.
For that future, Peter is an amazing producer, super collaborative and a really good guy. He’s the kind of guy who always wins the best idea and I always want to bet on storytellers who take this approach. And then James Gunn, I mean come on. Of Slither and Guardians [da Galáxia]and I have to say I loved his Suicide Squad.
Chris Morgan
As for the future of the franchise Shazam!, the second film featured Billy being recruited by the Justice Society of America. An upcoming project, however, depends on the success of the long.
There are really informal conversations with all of us (about a sequel) but nothing definitive because the movie has to go really well and we can really commit after that. I think it just depends on the success of the film. But, you know, these kids aren’t getting any younger, so we’ll know sooner or later.
Henry Gayden
In Brazil, Shazam already earned more than BRL 7 million.
